If you’re looking for a place to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, then The Lake Parklands at Forest Lake offers over 10 hectares of peace and serenity for the whole family to enjoy. You’ll be met with abundant wildlife, including birds, turtles, fish and lizards plus plenty of playgrounds to keep the little ones occupied for hours.
The Lake
The suburb of Forest Lake is built around a gorgeous man-made lake which acts as a focal point for the community to meet, socialise, exercise, relax and play. The lake itself is not available for recreational use, such as boating, which allows the fauna and flora to thrive while creating a real sense of tranquillity.
A gentle path follows along the entirety of the lake’s edge and should take approximately 40 minutes to complete if walking at a leisurely pace. It’s also suitable for prams, bikes and scooters, with many benches to stop and rest any weary legs. It is important to note there are no barriers between the pathway and the lake.
The Lake Parklands Forest Lake Playgrounds
Several modern playgrounds are near the lake, with two located on or just off the walking trail. The largest playground is situated along Wivenhoe Circuit and is best known as Forest Lake Playground as it’s nearest the main entrance and performance stage.
The lake provides an idyllic backdrop to this distinctly underwater-themed playground with a pirate ship, sea creature see saw and an unshaded coral reef-like climbing fort. There is also a swing set, merry-go-round and a unique water cycle chart which is totally relevant to the natural environment. This area also features a large picnic shelter, BBQs, toilets and opportunities for animal spotting.
Another great and partially shaded playground can be found on the southern end of The Lake Parklands and is located off Lakeside Crescent. This colourful playground is a climber’s delight with multiple nets, ladders, monkey bars, bridges and platforms.
This space also contains a swing set, spinning pole and cute koala bouncer plus picnic facilities such as an undercover area, BBQs and accessible toilets. There’s also an outdoor gym in this section of the parklands which can be accessed off the corner of The Esplanade and Montserrat Place.
Coffee
If you’re after a breakfast spot with stunning lake views, a relaxed vibe and great coffee then Simple Bliss at 3 The Esplanade is the place to be. A favourite for locals and visitors, this café is situated lakeside where diners can enjoy a bite on the deck while overlooking the beautiful Forest Lake scenery. It is open 7 days a week from early until lunch time and is dog friendly.
Imagination Factor
The playgrounds are filled with interactive elements and the pirate ship provides a great opportunity for imaginary play. Nature and wildlife-adoring children will surely be inspired by the vast lake and the animals who call it home, from slippery eels and turtles to graceful swans and pelicans. It would also be a great destination for amateur or pretend photographers, with interesting artwork, sculptures and architecture dotted throughout the parklands.
Accessibility
The lake’s perimeter is completely pathed, allowing access between the playgrounds and other amenities. There are at least three accessible toilet facilities throughout the parklands, one at each playground and another off the main car park on Forest Lake Boulevard.

What We Thought of The Lake Parklands Forest Lake
This picturesque part of south west Brisbane is well worth the drive and feels like a world away from busy, city life. We can’t think of many nicer ways to spend a day outdoors than with family, hot coffee, a leisurely walk around the lake and a bit of turtle spotting. With so much to discover both in and around the lake we think the kids will give it a big tick of approval too.
