  • AboutBrisbane Kids Creative was created by me! Ngaire Stirling. I wont pretend to talk in the third person about myself, instead let me tell you a bit about me and how 110.232.142.129/~brisba22 came about. At the time the domain name 110.232.142.129/~brisba22 came up for purchase I was a stay at home mum in the middle of a degree centred around journalism and PR. a couple of years earlier I had been contemplating returning to my previous career in marketing management and for a while I even tried. 3 months into a new role and it was clear that I had no passion for my old life and to make the decision to quit easier, my almost 2 year old at the time was not coping with childcare. So, as a family we made the decision for me to return to becoming a stay at home mum. About 1 years later or so.. 110.232.142.129/~brisba22 came up for sale. My friends had often commented on my ability to know exactly what was happening in Brisbane for kids. I had my son enrolled in some awesome activities and we often visited some great destinations. I loved finding fun things for us to do…

16 Savoury Australia Day Foods

Last Updated: February 18, 2023
Prawns

Our official national day is swiftly approaching (celebrated on 26 January), and what better way to embrace and celebrate our unique Australian culture than by sharing great food with friends and family? And with so many iconic Aussie dishes to choose from, there will definitely be something for everyone to enjoy!

1. Snags

It wouldn’t be Australia Day without a barbeque and a good old sausage sizzle! Throwing some snags on the barbie is the simplest way to get in the Aussie spirit! For kids, why not do some mini snags, like the ones seen on Smart Party Planning?

2. Pies

The iconic Aussie meat pie is also a great savoury food idea for Australia Day. Check out this recipe for Aussie Meat Pies by Super Food Ideas.

3. Vegemite

What is more Aussie than Vegemite? Start the day with simple Vegemite on toast, or make a great snack for kids and adults alike with these Vegemite Cheesy Scrolls made by Bake for Happy Kids. They are made using ‘my first Vegemite’ which is designed for children, with a milder taste and 50% less sodium.

4. Sausage rolls

Sausage rolls are also a great Australia Day food. For something really special, how about these Macadamia, Apricot, Apple and Sage Sausage Rolls by What Katie Ate?

5. Prawns

Prawns are a must for any Australia Day celebration. We love these Prawn and Avocado Skewers with Seafood Sauce by Super Food Ideas.

6. Salads

From traditional Australia Day barbeques to full-on sit-down meals, salads are a great accompaniment. We’re not talking a bit of iceberg lettuce with tomatoes and cucumber. Nope, we mean delicious, filling and exciting recipes like this Barbecued Pumpkin, Red Onion and Spinach Salad found on taste.com.au.

7. Damper

A traditional damper is a great Aussie food to make for Australia Day. There’s no need to just stick with a plain one either. Why not tszuj it up with herbs, cheese, pumpkin, proscuitto, olives or other delicious ingredients? This Pull-apart Bacon and Cheese Damper from Australian Good Taste looks amazing!

8. Lamb

Love or loathe the Sam Kekovich adverts, lamb is undeniably a big part of Australia Day. Roasts, racks, chops, cutlets, or however you like, there are some great recipes out there. Check out these super Aussie Macadamia Crumbed Lamb Cutlets with Beetroot Dip from Super Food Ideas!

9. Savoury slices

Baked savoury slices are so simple to make, healthy and delicious. Visit taste.com.au for the recipe for this delicious Zucchini Slice.

10. Burgers

Burgers are also a typical Australia Day food. We aren’t even going to link to a recipe here. If you have not tried to cook a hamburger this way then we encourage you to give it a go. Get a good quality mince, wait until a moment before you are about to fry the meat, add salt and paper to the mince, roll into a ball, flatten with a spatula and fry and the hottest heat you can get your pan. Flip, add American cheese and you are good to go. Trust us, you will never go back to massive beef paddies ever again!

11. Steak

Many Aussies love a good steak, but cooking it to perfection is a fine art. Visit RecipeTin for a step by step guide on how to cook steak like a chef.

Seafood is an Aussie summer staple, and calamari is a firm favourite. We love the look of this Calamari with Lemon Aioli and Pea and Mint Salad by delicious.
