  • AboutBrisbane Kids Creative was created by me! Ngaire Stirling. I wont pretend to talk in the third person about myself, instead let me tell you a bit about me and how 110.232.142.129/~brisba22 came about. At the time the domain name 110.232.142.129/~brisba22 came up for purchase I was a stay at home mum in the middle of a degree centred around journalism and PR. a couple of years earlier I had been contemplating returning to my previous career in marketing management and for a while I even tried. 3 months into a new role and it was clear that I had no passion for my old life and to make the decision to quit easier, my almost 2 year old at the time was not coping with childcare. So, as a family we made the decision for me to return to becoming a stay at home mum. About 1 years later or so.. 110.232.142.129/~brisba22 came up for sale. My friends had often commented on my ability to know exactly what was happening in Brisbane for kids. I had my son enrolled in some awesome activities and we often visited some great destinations. I loved finding fun things for us to do…

Explore Brisbane | Currimundi Lake And Surf Beach

Last Updated: October 30, 2018
Currimundi Lake, Sunshine Coast

If you’re looking for a family friendly day trip or holiday location that’s not too far from Brisbane, you can’t go past Currimundi Lake and Surf Beach on the beautiful Sunshine Coast.

Just one hour north of Brisbane, located between Caloundra and Maroochydore, are the calm waters and golden sands of Currimundi Lake which connect to the ocean at Currimundi surf beach.

Currimundi Lake – An Aquatic Playground

Currimundi Lake

This spot has it all for families – shady trees which hang over the beach (it doesn’t matter if you forget the beach umbrella!), calm and mostly shallow water for paddling in, and a vast expanse of sand for digging in.

As you gaze out over the lake, you’ll see families rowing boats, canoeing, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and swimming. If you don’t have your own equipment, you can hire kayaks and stand up paddle boards from a surf shop situated right on the beach front.

The lake is also a popular fishing spot, and you may be lucky enough to snag a whiting or bream. Bring a yabby pump to catch fresh bait. The kids will enjoy catching sand, mud and hermit crabs and small fish in nets and buckets.

When the tide is going out, a sandy island forms in the middle of the lake. It’s a great spot for a game of beach cricket or to throw a Frisbee around with friends.

Please be aware that dogs and motorised water craft are not permitted on the lake.

Currimundi Surf Beach – Something for Everyone

Currimundi Surf Beach

Walk over the dunes and you are at the Currimundi Surf beach, which is patrolled by lifesavers on weekends and school holidays. This is a popular spot for sky divers to land, so don’t set up your beach gear anywhere near a large “X marks the spot”! Swim or boogie board between the flags, throw out a line, collect shells along the shore or go for a long beach walk. Depending on the weather, you can get decent waves at this spot, so bring your surfboard or kite surf equipment.

Where to Eat in Currimundi

Both the lakeside and beachside are a pleasant spot for a picnic, and there are some grassy areas that are perfect for spreading out the picnic rug. There are also a number of tables and chairs provided as well as BBQ facilities. Alternatively, you can purchase food, drinks and ice-creams from the beach front cafes of Coco’s Beach Cafe or Kite Thrills Beach Espresso Bar.

Currimundi Parks and Playgrounds

Right on the Currimundi foreshore is the Cliff Hargreaves Park and Playground with toilet, BBQ and picnic facilities. The playground area is lit at night until 9pm, making it perfect for a BBQ dinner by the beach.

A short walk from Currimundi Lake is the Grahame Stewart Park on Currimundi Road. This large park offers a cricket pitch, basketball court, fenced playground and children’s bike track, complete with road markings, signage and obstacle course!

Playing in Currimundi

Finally, there is a large soccer field on Gothic Parade at Currimundi, if your Brisbane kids want to have a kick and run around.

Currimundi Walking and Cycling Tracks

Bike riding in Currimundi

There are pram, scooter and bike friendly walking paths that run alongside Currimundi Lake. If you head south, the picturesque coastal pathway will take you all the way to Pelican Waters. If you head north, you can walk or cycle through to Noosa.

A 15 minute bike ride in a northerly direction will take you through Crummunda Park (with playground and BBQ facilities) and on to the Currimundi Lake (Kathleen McArthur) Conservation Park.

Take a bushwalk through this park and see a small remnant of wallum heath that was once a common plant community along the Sunshine Coast. Wildflowers, coastal birds, and views of the ocean beach and lake feature here. Vividly coloured heath wildflowers reach their peak flowering time in late winter and spring months.

Currimundi Holiday Accommodation

Lake Currimundi

Camping is not permitted in Currimundi and there are no holiday parks, however, there are a number of apartments and houses available to rent through local agents you will find if you Google “Currimundi accommodation”. Alternatively, if you are holidaying in a group of 22 or more, the Currimundi Active Recreation Centre is available for hire.

There’s only one thing your Brisbane Kids won’t experience at Currimundi Lake and Beach… boredom!

Currimundi Lake can be accessed via Hume Parade, Currimundi.
