  • AboutBrisbane Kids Creative was created by me! Ngaire Stirling. I wont pretend to talk in the third person about myself, instead let me tell you a bit about me and how 110.232.142.129/~brisba22 came about. At the time the domain name 110.232.142.129/~brisba22 came up for purchase I was a stay at home mum in the middle of a degree centred around journalism and PR. a couple of years earlier I had been contemplating returning to my previous career in marketing management and for a while I even tried. 3 months into a new role and it was clear that I had no passion for my old life and to make the decision to quit easier, my almost 2 year old at the time was not coping with childcare. So, as a family we made the decision for me to return to becoming a stay at home mum. About 1 years later or so.. 110.232.142.129/~brisba22 came up for sale. My friends had often commented on my ability to know exactly what was happening in Brisbane for kids. I had my son enrolled in some awesome activities and we often visited some great destinations. I loved finding fun things for us to do…

Parasites: Life Undercover, at The Queensland Museum

The Queensland Museum at South Bank is one of those Brisbane destinations that should be visited often. Bring your curious kids and have a day out focussed on the strange and wonderful creatures of our world. As your kids grow and develop you will notice that different sections of the Museum garner different levels of interest. You may also notice that parts that dominated their experience previously, no longer do. This is why the Queensland Museum is one of those places you can go every couple of months (even if there isn’t a new exhibition), and find something new for your kids to be inspired by, to talk about, to Google or to find outside in the garden.

Parasites: Life Undercover exhibition

The Parasites: Life Undercover Exhibition is, as you would imagine, all about parasites. What you can’t anticipate is the sheer variety of perspectives that the exhibition offers, from the many hosts to the variety of cunning parasites.

It is a one HUGE room exhibition with a number of displays either featuring very lifelike animals or oversized parasites. It won’t take up an entire visit to the museum but it is a must see if you go. Entry to the Museum and to this exhibition are free.

What are parasites?

A parasite is an organism which lives off another organism. When most people think of parasites they think of worms or ticks, (or dreaded head lice), but there are many different types of parasites; Malaria for example is caused by a parasite.

I know what you are thinking EW! but it is actually a very interesting exhibition made more engaging by the incredible animal and bug displays and the reactions of the kids that stare incredulously at what is in front of them. Take the time to explain to your kids what they are actually seeing and their minds will boggle further.

Parasites: Life Undercover kept my 4 year old completely mesmerised for about an hour. Maybe 10 minutes of that was having photos taken of her next to every display and then every display needed to be photographed again without her in it. She is obsessed by bugs and furry animals and Brisbane Kids would suggest it will appeal to any child with this sort of interest.
